SSBU Duo Starts Strong, Faces Friendly Fire Thursday
NoSmo and TSO are chasing the second Esports national championship of the season for NWACC in the Tier 2 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament
BENTONVILLE - On the first day of the NJCAAE Tier 2 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 1v1 National Tournament, NWACC's two entries passed both of their day one tests.
NoSmo (Mauricio Pernudi) and TSO (Brayden Mullenax) won in the first two rounds of the Upper Bracket Tuesday, setting up a battle against each other in round four that will shape the rest of their respective playoff journeys.
Two-seeded NoSmo, touting an undefeated regular-season record, swept a Marshalltown Community College opponent in Round Two before beating another from Marshalltown 3-1, only the first time all season that NoSmo has dropped a single game in a series.
TSO, who earned the six seed in the tournament, knocked off yet another Marshalltown competitor in the second round, 3-1, before squeaking by upset-minded Carl Albert State College, who came in at #19 but had already beaten #14 North Florida State and #3 Trinity Valley.
Both TSO and NoSmo earned first-round byes in the tournament.
The winner of the all-Eagle battle, slated for 5 p.m. Thursday, will continue on in the Upper Bracket and play #16 Collin College in the Upper Bracket final. Winning the Upper Bracket in the double-elimination tournament would send that team straight to the final with two chances to defeat the winner of the Lower Bracket, where all teams have already lost once, for the title of NJCAAE National Champion.
The loser between NoSmo and TSO will play an opponent yet to be determined in the sixth round of the Lower Bracket, with the winner advancing to the Lower Bracket final. The winner of the Lower Bracket will have the opportunity to defeat the winner of the Upper Bracket twice in order to become the National Champion.
Thursday's match between NoSmo and TSO will be broadcast live on the NWACC Esports Twitch channel.
